An alert message is an error message displayed when a purchase restriction is violated. Set a clear message so customers can recognize and correct the issue.
Enter your message in the Alert message card on each rule's edit screen.
For product quantity rules, you can set separate messages for Minimum quantity, Maximum quantity, and Increment violations.
You can insert variables into your message. For a full list of available variables, see "Using Variables."
On the Online Store, alert messages are displayed according to the Shopify theme in use, so the exact location may vary depending on your theme.
On the checkout page, alert messages are displayed at the top of the checkout page.
The display timing for alert messages can be changed from Alert message → Display timing on each rule's edit screen.
Display timing also controls when the restriction check process is executed — not just when the message appears.
Setting | When the check runs and message appears |
|---|---|
Cart updated and checkout | When items are added to, removed from, or updated in the cart, and at checkout |
Checkout only | At checkout only |
This setting is suitable for most restriction rules. Because feedback is given immediately when a violation occurs, customers can make corrections smoothly.
We recommend Checkout only in the following cases:
When you have set a minimum purchase amount (to prevent alerts from appearing while customers are still browsing)
When your Shopify theme does not support error display on cart changes
In the following conditions, display timing is automatically fixed to Checkout only:
Price rule: When Cart subtotal or Grand total is selected as the Price type
Customer rule: When customer accounts are not required, or when Email domain restriction is used
Bundle rule: When Complementary is selected as the Bundle limit level
