The alert message is an error message shown when a purchase restriction is violated. Set a clear message so customers can notice the restriction and correct their order.
Enter your message in "Alert message" on each rule's edit screen. For quantity rules, you can set a separate message for each of minimum quantity, maximum quantity, and increment; for price rules, for minimum price and maximum price; and for weight rules, for minimum weight and maximum weight. For quantity, price, and weight limits by product, set the message in "Settings" for each feature.
For quantity, price, and weight rules, you can insert variables into the message. For the variables you can use, see "Using Variables".
On the online store, the alert message is displayed according to the implementation of the Shopify theme you use, so the display location varies by theme. At checkout, it is displayed at the top of the page.
By default, the alert message on the online store is displayed according to the theme's implementation. If you enable "Show alert message in modal" in "Settings" in the app admin, the app displays the alert message in a modal regardless of the theme's implementation. Use this if your theme does not support error display for the Cart and Checkout Validation API, or if you want to improve how the message is displayed.
Prerequisite: Change the modal display setting in "Settings", not on each rule's edit screen.
Note: When you enable modal display, the app cannot determine whether a displayed message comes from RuffRuff Order Limits or from the theme or another app. Error messages from the theme or other apps may also be displayed in the modal. If your theme's normal error display is working without issues, leave this setting disabled.
You can change the display timing in "Alert message" → "Display timing" on each rule's edit screen. The display timing is both when the alert message is displayed and when the restriction is evaluated.
Setting | When the Restriction Is Evaluated and the Message Is Displayed |
|---|---|
Cart updated and checkout | When items are added to, removed from, or their quantity changed in the cart, and at checkout |
Checkout only | Checkout only |
This is suited for most rules. Because the message is displayed as soon as a restriction is violated, customers can correct their order smoothly.
When you have set a minimum purchase amount or minimum quantity and want to avoid showing an alert while the customer is still selecting products
When the theme you use does not support error display when the cart is updated
With the following settings, the display timing is fixed to "Checkout only" and cannot be changed.
Price rule: When you select "Cart subtotal" or "Grand total" as the price type
Customer rule: When "Require account" is not checked, or when email domain restrictions are used
Bundle rule: When you select "With other products" or "With specified items" as the bundle limit level
