RuffRuff Order Limits

Initial Setup (Product Quantity Limits)

This explains the steps for using product quantity limits for the first time after installation.

There are three ways to limit product quantity: "quantity rules," which limit the total quantity across a broad scope, "quantity limits by product," which limit quantity per product or variant, and "cumulative quantity rules," which limit by the total purchased across orders.

Choose the method to use depending on the unit you want to limit.

Method

Best suited for

Applicability options

Quantity rules

Limiting a broad scope or a combined total quantity at once

Cart, Product, Variant

Quantity limits by product

Changing the limit depending on the product

Product, Variant

Cumulative quantity rules

Setting a per-customer limit on the total purchased across orders

Whole rule, Product, Variant

Before creating a quantity rule, choose a pricing plan from "Pricing" in the app admin.

Prerequisite: A test contract for a pricing plan is required even when testing on a development store. Under Shopify's specifications, test contracts are free.

Prerequisite: To use cumulative quantity rules, subscribe to the Full plan. Quantity rules and quantity limits by product are available on the Light plan as well.

(1) Open Quantity rules

Open the app admin → "Quantity limits" → "Quantity rules".

(2) Add a quantity rule

Select "Add quantity rule".

(3) Save the settings

Configure the required fields and save.

You can configure the following for a quantity rule.

(4) Enable the quantity rule

For a quantity rule, select the rule in the list and choose "Enable rule", or select "Enable" on the edit screen.

(1) Open Quantity limits by product

Open the app admin → "Quantity limits" → "Quantity limits by product".

(2) Start using it

Select "Start using". This prepares the settings for products and variants.

(3) Enable quantity limits by product

Open "Settings" and select "Enable". This creates and enables a dedicated checkout rule.

(4) Set the quantity for each product or variant

For the eligible products, select "Edit total quantity target" or "Edit each variant limit", then select "Save changes".

(1) Open Cumulative quantity rules

Open the app admin → "Quantity limits" → "Cumulative quantity rules".

(2) Enable cumulative purchase limits

Grant the additional permissions and select "Enable". The app can then read order and customer information and store each customer's total.

Note: Once cumulative purchase limits are enabled, they cannot be turned back off. To stop limiting, disable or stop an individual rule instead.

(3) Create a cumulative quantity rule

Select "Create rule", then set the maximum quantity, eligible items, what the total is counted per, and the messages, and save.

(4) Enable the cumulative quantity rule

Select "Enable" on the rule details screen. Tracking starts when you create the rule; past orders are not counted retroactively.

Enabling the app embed is a recommended setting. It is required if you want to use product messages and quantity picker control. If you only use quantity limits at checkout, this step is not necessary.

(1) Open the theme editor

Open Shopify admin → "Online Store" → "Themes" → "Customize".

(2) Open App embeds

Select the "App embeds" tab at the bottom left of the theme editor.

(3) Enable RuffRuff Order Limits

Enable "RuffRuff Order Limits" and save.

Note: Quantity limits are still enforced at checkout even if you don't enable the app embed. The app embed is required for product messages and quantity picker control.

If the display timing is "Cart updated and checkout," check in the cart. If it is "Checkout only," proceed to checkout to check. For a cumulative quantity rule, the evaluation that includes past purchases happens at checkout.
