About Quantity Rules by Customer Group

Learn how to set quantity limits for customer groups using customer tags or a customer metafield, enable rules, and test their behavior.

Quantity rules by customer group let you sort customers into groups based on customer tags or a customer metafield and set how many items they can purchase in a single order. Use this feature to set purchase limits by membership tier or purchase increments for wholesale customers.

Available on the Full plan. Conditions based on customer tags or a customer metafield apply to logged-in customers.

  • For each group, you can select "No limit," "Limit," or "Cannot purchase."

  • For "Limit," you can set the minimum quantity, maximum quantity, and increment.

  • You can also set separate limits for members who do not match any additional group and for guests who are not logged in.

To limit cumulative purchase quantities across multiple orders, use cumulative quantity rules.

(1) Open the rule creation page

In the app admin, go to "Quantity limits" → "Quantity rules by customer group," then select "Create rule."

(2) Set the rule name and group condition

Enter a rule name for administrative use. Under "Group condition," select "Customer tags" or "Customer metafield." If you select "Customer metafield," also enter the namespace and key to use.

(3) Configure the additional groups and base groups

Select "Add group" to enter a group name and condition, then set the limit for each group. Also review the limits for "Member" and "Guest," and arrange the additional groups in priority order.

Only the first matching additional group, starting from the top, applies. The default setting for "Member" and "Guest" is "No limit." Make sure the limits are configured as intended.

(4) Set the applicability and eligible items

Select how quantities are counted from "Variant," "Product," or "Cart," then specify the eligible items to limit.

(5) Configure the messages and save

Enter a product message if needed, review the alert messages and display timing, then save the settings.

(1) Enable the rule

On the details page that appears after saving, select "Enable." Saving the rule alone does not enable the limits.

(2) Configure the display on product pages

To use product messages or quantity input controls on a supported theme, enable the "RuffRuff Order Limits" app embed in your theme. This is not required if you only use limits at checkout.

  • Log in as a customer in each additional group and test quantities within and above the maximum, as well as quantities that do and do not match the purchase increment.

  • Also test as a member who does not match any additional group and as a guest who is not logged in.

  • If "Display timing" is set to "Cart updated and checkout," test the rule in the cart and at checkout. If it is set to "Checkout only," test it at checkout.

Entering an email address at checkout does not log the customer in. The guest limits apply to customers who are not logged in, regardless of their customer tags or customer metafield value.

Existing quantity rules, quantity limits by product, and other rules continue to apply after you add this rule. "No limit" means that this rule does not impose a limit. It does not remove limits imposed by other rules.
