For products with two or more variants, you can configure detailed settings for each variant individually by clicking Edit limits for each variant. The top of the modal shows the weight unit currently in effect and where it comes from (individual / product unit).

The weight unit cannot be overridden per variant here. The weight unit configured in ① always applies.
Configure a limit on the total weight across all variants combined. This section is shown only for products with two or more variants, or products that already have a total weight limit configured.

For products with the total weight limit enabled and two or more variants, you can configure which variants are included in the total by clicking Edit total weight targets.

Variants without a weight set are always exempt from the limits (both the Weight Limit and the Total Weight Limit).
Because Shopify allows the weight unit to differ per variant, a single product can occasionally end up with mixed registered units across its variants. If you leave Weight unit on "Product unit" (no individual override), keep the following in mind:
In ①, the minimum/maximum weight is interpreted per variant using that variant's own registered unit. For example, a configured value of 20–40 applies as 20g–40g to a gram variant, but 20kg–40kg to a kilogram variant.
In ②, the total weight limit is interpreted using whichever variant appears first in the cart's line order — so on a mixed-unit product, the result can depend on the order items were added to the cart.
The "Product unit (◯◯)" parenthetical shown in the list table reflects only the product's first variant.
For any product where variants might have mixed units, we recommend explicitly setting Weight unit to g, kg, oz, or lb rather than leaving it on the auto-following default.
