About Quantity Limits by Product

This article explains the overview and features of quantity limits by product.

Quantity limits by product let you set a different minimum quantity, maximum quantity, and increment for each product or variant. You can also set a "Total quantity limit" that combines all variants of a product.

This is a good fit when you want to change conditions in detail for each product or variant, or when you want many different limits to be handled by a single checkout rule when enabled.

When you enable quantity limits by product, it consumes 1 checkout rule overall, regardless of the number of products or variants configured. Product quantity rules consume 1 per enabled rule.

For a product with multiple variants, in addition to applying a common limit, you can set a different limit for each variant, or exclude specific variants from the limit.

Example

Details

Common setting

Set black, white, red, and blue all to a maximum of 5

Individual setting

Set black and white to a maximum of 5, and red and blue to a maximum of 6 in increments of 2

The "Total quantity limit" combines the eligible variants of the same product to determine the minimum quantity, maximum quantity, and increment. You can also exclude specific variants from the total.

The table below shows an example where only a total maximum of 5 is set, without also using a per-variant quantity limit.

  • Set different quantity limits for each product or variant

  • Use both per-variant limits and a total-across-variants limit within a single product

  • Combine many different quantity limits into a single checkout rule overall when enabled

Quantity limits by product are a good fit for setting detailed conditions for each product or variant, while product quantity rules are a good fit for applying the same condition together across a broad range.

Note: Due to a Shopify limit, you can enable up to a total of 25 checkout rules per store, including checkout rules enabled by other apps. Each enabled product quantity rule counts as 1, and quantity limits by product counts as 1 overall when enabled.
