RuffRuff Order Limits

(Use Case) Require Purchase Together with a Specific Category

This is a configuration example for using Excluded items to restrict eligible items so they can only be purchased together with specific products.

Use this when you want to prevent specific products — such as accessories or add-on items — from being sold on their own, and require them to be purchased only alongside products from a specific category.

By combining Complementary with ④ Excluded items, you can create a restriction that allows bundling only with products from a specific category.

This example uses a snowboard shop to explain how to set up a restriction where a snowboard bag can only be purchased together with a snowboard.

  • Snowboard bag only → Not allowed

  • Snowboard bag + snowboard → Allowed

  • Snowboard bag + snowboard wear → Not allowed

Cart contents

Result

Reason

Snowboard bag only

Not allowed

Eligible item only — standalone purchase not allowed

Snowboard bag + snowboard

Allowed

A non-eligible, non-excluded item is present

Snowboard bag + snowboard wear

Not allowed

Snowboard wear is an excluded item and is removed from the check, so the bag is treated as a standalone purchase

Snowboard only

Allowed

No eligible items in cart — rule does not apply

Prepare a collection or product tag in advance that includes all products you do not want customers to purchase together with the snowboard bag (i.e., all products other than snowboards and snowboard bags).

When Complementary is selected, the alert message Display timing is automatically fixed to Checkout only. Displaying an error on the cart page is not supported.

Setting Bundle limit level to Complementary means the eligible item (snowboard bag) cannot be purchased without other products.

Products set in ④ Excluded items (such as snowboard wear) are removed from the restriction check entirely — even if they are in the cart, the bag is still treated as a standalone purchase.

This ensures that the snowboard bag can only be purchased when a snowboard is in the cart.

  • Combining Complementary with Excluded items allows you to create a restriction that permits bundling only with products from a specific category.

  • Products set as Excluded items are completely removed from the bundle restriction check. Add products you do not want purchased alongside the eligible item — such as snowboard wear — to Excluded items.

  • It is important that products you want customers to purchase together with the eligible item — such as snowboards — are set as neither eligible items nor excluded items.

  • Using collections makes it easy to manage the configuration without changes, even as your product catalog grows.
