Bundle rules let you restrict which combinations of products can be added to the cart at the same time. By combining the bundle limit level with eligible items, you can set various sales conditions, such as allowing only standalone purchases or requiring a bundle with specific products.
Note: Shopify allows up to 25 active checkout rules per store in total, including rules enabled by other apps. Each enabled bundle rule uses one of these.
The following are the settings available for bundle rules.
Field | Description |
|---|---|
Title | The name used to identify the rule |
Limit details | The range eligible items can be bundled within |
Eligible items | The scope of products the limit applies to |
Items that can be bundled / Items that cannot be bundled / Required items | The partner products when you select "Selected items," "Cannot bundle with selected items," or "With specified items" |
Excluded items | Products not included in the bundle rule evaluation |
Product message | The purchase-condition notice shown on the product page |
Alert message | The message and display timing shown when the limit applies |
Status | Whether the bundle rule is enabled or disabled |
This is an administrative name to identify the rule. It is not shown to customers. When creating multiple rules, use a name that makes them easy to distinguish.
Select the "Bundle limit level" from 8 options. In the admin, selecting "Standalone purchase not allowed" shows 2 sub-options, and selecting "Bundle only with specific items" shows 4 sub-options.
How to select it in the admin | Description |
|---|---|
No bundling (standalone only) | Eligible items can only be purchased on their own. They cannot be bundled with other products, including other variations of the same product. |
Standalone purchase not allowed → With other products | Eligible items cannot be purchased on their own. They can be purchased if the cart includes at least one ineligible product. |
Standalone purchase not allowed → With specified items | Eligible items can only be purchased when the cart includes at least one of the products specified under "Required items." Other products may also be included. |
Bundle only with specific items → Eligible items in this rule | Only eligible items can be bundled together. They cannot be bundled with other products. |
Bundle only with specific items → Items from the same vendor | Only eligible items from the same vendor can be bundled together. They cannot be bundled with eligible items from a different vendor, or with ineligible products. |
Bundle only with specific items → Variations of the same product | Only variations of the same product can be bundled together. They cannot be bundled with other products. |
Bundle only with specific items → Selected items | Eligible items can only be bundled with the items listed under "Items that can be bundled" (eligible items can always be bundled together). The selected items themselves are not restricted. |
Cannot bundle with selected items | Eligible items cannot be bundled with the items listed under "Items that cannot be bundled." They can be bundled with any other products. The selected items themselves are not restricted. |
Note: If you select "With other products" or "With specified items," the alert message's display timing is fixed to "Checkout only." It is not evaluated on the cart page.
Note: For "Selected items," "Cannot bundle with selected items," and "With specified items," you cannot specify "All items" as the eligible items. Specify eligible items using specific collections, specific products, or products with specific tags instead.
Tip: In the rule list and summary, the bundle limit level is shown using a more descriptive label than in the edit screen — for example, "Bundle with eligible items only" or "Standalone purchase not allowed." Check the edit screen to see the actual configured value.
Select the scope of products the limit applies to.
Value | Description |
|---|---|
All items | All products in the store |
Specific collections | Products and variants included in the selected collections (up to 50 collections) |
Specific products | The selected products or variants (up to 50 products and up to 50 variants) |
Products with specific tags | Products with any of the specified tags (up to 50 tags, OR condition) |
Note: If you set eligible items to a collection that includes only some of a product's variants, the bundle limit is evaluated only for the variants included in the collection. The product message, however, is shown on all variants of the product that variant belongs to.
This is shown when you select "Selected items," "Cannot bundle with selected items," or "With specified items" for the bundle limit level. Depending on the option you select, the card name changes to "Items that can be bundled," "Items that cannot be bundled," or "Required items." Specify the partner products the same way as eligible items (specific collections, specific products, or products with specific tags — up to 50 of each).
The specified partner products themselves are not restricted by this rule.
If you specify a product that overlaps with the eligible items, a warning is shown. Overlapping items are treated as eligible items, not as bundle partners.
Specify products to leave out of the bundle rule evaluation. Excluded products are treated as neither eligible items nor ineligible items.
Use this to leave some of the eligible items out of the rule.
For "Selected items," use this to allow auto-added products such as gift wrapping without listing them under "Items that can be bundled."
For "Cannot bundle with selected items," use this to create an exception to the "Items that cannot be bundled" condition.
For "With other products" and "With specified items," use this if you don't want auto-added products to count as "other products." Adding only excluded products does not satisfy the condition.
This is the message shown above or below the cart button on the product page of eligible items. Leave it blank if you don't need to notify customers of the purchase condition in advance.
Prerequisite: To show the product message, enable the app embed in your main theme. If you only use the bundle limit on the cart and at checkout, the app embed is not required.
Variables are not available in the product message for bundle rules.
Set the message shown when the limit applies, and the display timing. Variables are not available in the alert message either.
Value | Description |
|---|---|
Cart updated and checkout | When the cart is updated and at checkout |
Checkout only | At checkout |
Note: When the display timing is "Cart updated and checkout," the check runs against the cart state after each cart action. For customers who already had eligible items in their cart before the rule was created, if removing another product results in a combination that matches the limit, the removal itself may be blocked. Set the display timing to "Checkout only" to skip evaluation on the cart page.
A bundle rule you create is not applied to the store until you enable it.
Value | Description |
|---|---|
Enabled | The limit from the bundle rule is applied. |
Disabled | The limit from the bundle rule is not applied. |
