How Orders Over the Limit Are Detected

This article explains how cumulative purchase limits detect orders that went over the limit, and how to set up the order details page to see them.

Cumulative purchase limits detect orders that went over the limit without being stopped at checkout, and orders with items that could not be added to a total, when totals are counted. Such orders are marked “Review required”. To see the records, add the Cumulative purchase limits block to order details in the Shopify admin.

Prerequisite: This article is for stores using cumulative quantity rules or cumulative price rules. Detection and recording happen whether or not the block is added.

In the following cases, the purchase cannot be stopped at checkout. The total used for the check has not been updated yet, so this cannot be fully prevented.

  • The same customer places orders one after another before totals are updated.

  • The same customer checks out in several tabs or on several devices at the same time.

These orders are detected when totals are counted and marked “Review required” on the order. Find them with the steps below, then handle each one yourself, for example by canceling the order or changing the quantity.

Detection happens when totals are counted. It does not stop the order at checkout.

  • Totals can take a few minutes to update.

  • Additional orders from a customer who is already over the limit are recorded each time.

  • Orders placed while a rule is disabled are not recorded as over the limit. Items that could not be added to a total are recorded regardless of the rule's state.

There are two reasons. A single order can have both recorded.

Reason

When it is recorded

Over the limit

After the order was counted, the customer's total went over the rule's limit

Items that could not be added to the total

The customer's breakdown for the rule was at its cap of 250 products or variants, so items in the order could not be added to the total

  • A total equal to the limit is not recorded. Only totals over the limit are recorded.

  • Items that could not be added to a total occur when a rule's breakdown for that customer is at its cap of 250 products or variants and the customer buys one that is not recorded yet. That item is not limited by the rule from then on.

The Cumulative purchase limits block does not appear on the order details page just because the app is installed. Add it with the following steps.

(1) In Shopify admin, open any order detail

From Orders, open one of your orders.

(2) At the bottom of the page, select “+ Block” from “Blocks”

The list of blocks you can add appears.

(3) From the app block list, select “Cumulative purchase limits” and add it

This is the RuffRuff Order Limits block.

(4) Select the pin icon on the added block to pin it

Pinning keeps the block on the order details pages you open later.

(5) Select “Save”

The order details layout is saved.

Caution: If you do not pin the block, it will not appear the next time you open the page.

Where the block appears, and whether it starts expanded, are decided by settings in the Shopify admin. The app cannot change them.

The block shows the tracking result for that order.
