This example uses customer tags to allow Gold members to purchase up to 5 items, Silver members up to 3 items, and other members up to 2 items. Guests cannot purchase, making the products available to members only.
Use the Full plan and prepare customer accounts and eligible items for testing. In this example, the quantity a customer can purchase in a single order is limited for each eligible variant.
Customer | Condition | Quantity they can purchase |
|---|---|---|
Gold member | Logged in and has the gold tag | 1–5 items |
Silver member | Logged in and has the silver tag (without the gold tag) | 1–3 items |
Other members | Logged in and has neither tag | 1–2 items |
Guest | Not logged in | Cannot purchase |
(1) Open the customer
In the Shopify admin, go to "Customers" and open the customer whose membership tier you want to set.
(2) Add the tags
Add gold as a customer tag for Gold members and silver for Silver members, then save. After saving, confirm that the tags have been added.
(1) Create a rule
In the app admin, go to "Quantity limits" → "Quantity rules by customer group" → "Create rule," then enter "Purchase limits by membership tier" as the rule name.
(2) Add the additional groups
Under "Group condition," select "Customer tags," then select "Add group" and add the following two groups.
Group name | Customer tags |
|---|---|
Gold member | gold |
Silver member | silver |
(3) Set the limit for each group
Configure the additional groups and base groups as follows. For the three groups set to "Limit," set the minimum quantity to 1 and the increment to 1.
Group | Limit | Maximum quantity |
|---|---|---|
Gold member | Limit | 5 |
Silver member | Limit | 3 |
Member | Limit | 2 |
Guest | Cannot purchase | No setup required |
(4) Set the priority
Arrange the additional groups with Gold member first and Silver member second.
For a customer who has both the gold and silver tags, the Gold member limit applies because that group is higher in the list. When the customer is not logged in, they are treated as a guest and cannot purchase, regardless of which tags they have.
(5) Set the eligible items and message
Set "Applicability" to "Variant" and select the eligible items. For the alert message shown when a customer cannot purchase, use wording that makes it clear that login is required, such as "This item is available to members only. Log in to purchase it."
(6) Save and enable the rule
Save the settings, then select "Enable" on the details page.
Log in as a Gold member and confirm that a quantity of 5 meets the limit and that an alert appears for a quantity of 6.
For a Silver member, test quantities of 3 and 4. For another member, test quantities of 2 and 3.
Log in as a member who has both tags and confirm that the Gold member maximum applies.
Log out and confirm that the item cannot be purchased even in a quantity of 1.
Test the rule in the cart or at checkout according to the display timing. If you also use other quantity rules, their conditions must also be met.
