Quantity Rules by Customer Group Settings

Learn about group conditions, priority, quantity settings, messages, and interactions with other rules for quantity rules by customer group.

This article explains the settings for quantity rules by customer group and how group matching is evaluated. This feature is available on the Full plan.

Setting

Description

Rule name

A name used for administrative purposes.

Group condition

Select "Customer tags" or "Customer metafield." You cannot use both in the same rule.

Namespace and key

Specify these when using a customer metafield for the group condition. For example, for custom.customer_type, the namespace is custom and the key is customer_type.

If you switch between "Customer tags" and "Customer metafield" in an existing rule, all additional groups are deleted. The names and limits of the base groups remain. Review the additional group settings before making this change.

Setting

Description

Group name

The name displayed for the {{tierName}} variable in product messages and alert messages.

Condition

Specify customer tags or customer metafield values. You can set up to 5 values per group, and a customer matches the group if any one of them matches.

Limit

Select "No limit," "Limit," or "Cannot purchase."

Minimum quantity

Required when "Limit" is selected. Enter an integer of 1 or greater.

Maximum quantity

Specify this to set a maximum. Leave it blank to set no maximum for this group.

Increment

The increment in which items must be purchased. It is required when "Limit" is selected and must be an integer of 1 or greater.

The minimum quantity and, if set, the maximum quantity must be multiples of the increment. The maximum quantity must be greater than or equal to the minimum quantity. For example, with a minimum of 24 and an increment of 12, quantities of 24, 36, 48, and so on meet the condition.

  • You can add up to 10 additional groups. Drag them to change their order. Only the first matching group, starting from the top, applies.

  • "Member" applies to logged-in customers who do not match any additional group. "Guest" applies to customers who are not logged in. The base groups remain fixed at the bottom.

  • The default setting for the base groups is "No limit." The default settings for an additional group are "Limit," a minimum quantity of 1, no maximum quantity, and an increment of 1.

Conditions based on customer tags or a customer metafield apply only to logged-in customers. A customer who has only entered an email address at checkout is treated as a guest.

Condition type

How it is evaluated

Customer tags

A customer matches if they have any of the specified tags. Matching is case-insensitive.

Customer metafield

A customer matches when the saved value exactly matches a configured value. Supported types are single-line text, integer, and True or False. List types are not supported.

A customer does not match an additional group if the metafield value is blank, does not match the condition, or uses an unsupported type. The member settings apply if the customer is logged in, and the guest settings apply if they are not logged in.

Applicability

How quantities are counted

Variant

Counts each eligible variant separately.

Product

Totals the eligible variants of the same product.

Cart

Totals the eligible items in the cart. Items that are not eligible are excluded.

Choose all items, specific products, specific collections, or products with specific tags as eligible items. Setting a minimum quantity for an eligible item that is not in the cart cannot require the customer to add that item.

Setting

Description

Product message

Configure product messages separately for groups set to "Limit" and "Cannot purchase." A message is not shown if the field is blank. Product messages are not shown to groups set to "No limit."

Alert message

Set messages for violations of the minimum quantity, maximum quantity, or increment, and for groups that cannot purchase. The available fields depend on the groups you have configured.

Display timing

Select "Cart updated and checkout" or "Checkout only."

The available variables are {{tierName}}, {{minQuantity}}, {{maxQuantity}}, and {{increment}}. Use {{tierName}} in messages for groups that cannot purchase. You can translate group names and each message by selecting "Translate" on the details page.

The app embed must be enabled to use product messages or quantity input controls on supported themes. Controls for the minimum quantity and increment in the quantity input are supported when "Applicability" is set to "Variant." For product- or cart-level limits, do not rely on the quantity input alone; also test the rule in the cart or at checkout.

Existing rules continue to apply. Selecting "No limit" does not remove limits imposed by other rules. This feature limits quantities within a single order. To apply limits across multiple orders, use cumulative quantity rules.
