How Product-Specific Customer Limits Work

An overview of the feature that decides which customers can purchase each product or variant, based on login, customer tags, and customer metafield values.

Product-specific customer limits let you restrict which customers can purchase each product or variant, based on login, customer tags, and customer metafield values. Customers who do not meet the conditions are blocked from purchasing in the cart or at checkout. The feature does not restrict viewing the product page.

When you enable it, it uses one checkout rule overall, regardless of how many products you configure.

  • You want to sell member-only products only to customers who have a customer tag such as vip

  • You want to store a membership rank in a customer metafield and sell different products for each rank

  • You want customers with a specific customer tag to be unable to purchase certain products

  • You want to change which customers can purchase each variant of the same product

To group products by collection or product tag and apply the same conditions, use a Customer Rule. For the differences, see "Customer Rule vs. Product-Specific Customer Limits".

For each product or variant, product-specific customer limits can use the conditions below. You can set up to 10 customer tags and 10 values for allow, and up to 10 customer tags and 10 values for block.

  • Login required: Only logged-in customers can purchase.

  • Allow (Can buy if they have it): Only customers who have any of the selected customer tags or values can purchase.

  • Block (Cannot buy if they have it): Customers who have any of the selected customer tags or values cannot purchase.

If you set both allowed tags and allowed values, only customers who meet both can purchase. You cannot select the same tag or value for both allow and block.

Product-specific customer limits check the conditions in this order. The first matching alert message is shown, one per product.

  1. Login required

  2. Block tags

  3. Block values

  4. Allow tags

  5. Allow values

Whether guests (not logged in) can purchase depends on the product's conditions.

  • A product with login required, or with an allow condition: They cannot purchase.

  • A product with only block conditions: They can purchase.

If the email address entered at checkout matches an existing customer in the store, the limit uses that customer's tags and values even when the visitor is not logged in. A login-required condition is met only by logging in.

You choose when product-specific customer limits are evaluated in the alert message "Display timing": "Cart updated and checkout" (default) or "Checkout only".

For products without login required, customer tag and value conditions apply only at checkout, whatever the display timing.

You can set only the customer tags and values registered on the settings page. Shopify requires you to specify the customer tags to check in advance, and that number has a limit. Registration is shared across the store.

  • Customer tags: You can register up to 100.

  • Customer metafield values: You can register up to 100 per metafield.

Note: If you delete the registration of a customer tag or value that is in use, block conditions on that product stop applying, and no customer can meet the allow conditions. A product with an allow condition can no longer be purchased by any customer.

For how to register them and for the limits, see "Product-Specific Customer Limits: Settings".

You can enter and save the settings without a pricing plan. To enable the feature and apply it at checkout, you need the Light plan or the Full plan. For details, see Plans.

To show product messages on the product page, enable the app embed in your main theme. If you only use the limit at checkout, the app embed is not required.

Note: Shopify allows up to 25 active checkout rules per store in total, including rules from other apps. Product-specific customer limits use one of these, regardless of how many products you configure.
