With product-specific customer limits, you decide which customers can purchase each product or variant. In this article, you set up a product that only customers with the customer tag vip can purchase.
To enable product-specific customer limits, you need the Light plan or the Full plan. You can enter and save the settings before you subscribe to a pricing plan.
Assign the customer tag or customer metafield value you will use to the customers it should match.
To show a product message on the product page, enable the app embed in your main theme. If you only use the limit at checkout, the app embed is not required.
If you have already started, go to Step 2.
(1) Open product-specific customer limits
In the app sidebar, open "Customer limits", then select "Manage" on the "Product-specific customer limits" card.
(2) Select "Start"
The first time, "Start using product-specific customer limits" is shown. Select "Start".
Starting the feature does not apply it at checkout until you enable it in Step 4.
You can set only the customer tags and values registered on the settings page. If none are registered, the product list shows "No customer tags or values are registered for conditions".
(1) Open the settings page
Select "Settings" at the top right of the product list.
(2) Register the customer tag vip
On the "Customer tags" card, select "Register customer tag", enter vip in "Tag", and select "Register". Enter the same string as the tag on the customer. Matching is not case-sensitive.
Optional: If you enter a name such as "VIP member" in "Display name on product pages", that name is shown for {{allowedCustomers}} in the product message.
(3) Save the settings
Select "Save" in the save bar at the top of the page. The registration takes effect when you save the settings.
To limit by a customer metafield value, set the reference (namespace, key, and type) on the "Customer metafields" card, then register the value with "Register value". For details, see "Product-Specific Customer Limits: Settings".
(1) Set the product status to "Enabled"
On the product list for product-specific customer limits, set "Status" for the product to "Enabled". While it stays "Not set", you cannot set login, customer tags, or customer metafields.
(2) Allow the customer tag vip
On the product, select "Add tags" under "Customer tags", then select "Allow" on the vip row. Allow means "Can buy if they have it". Block means "Cannot buy if they have it".
In this example, leave "Login" as "Not required". To limit the product to logged-in customers, set it to "Required".
(3) Save your changes
Select "Save" in the save bar at the top of the page.
Optional: To use different conditions for each variant, select "Edit variant restrictions" on the product and choose a "Limit method". This appears only when the status is "Enabled" and the product has two or more variants. For how the limit methods differ, see "Product-Specific Customer Limits: Settings".
(1) Enable the feature
Select "Settings" at the top right of the product list, then turn on the switch on the "Product-specific customer limits" card.
(2) Save the settings
Select "Save" in the save bar at the top of the page.
Note: When you enable it, it uses one checkout rule, regardless of how many products you configure. Shopify allows up to 25 active checkout rules per store in total, including rules from other apps.
Add a product that allows the vip tag to the cart, and continue to checkout.
Customers who do not have the vip tag, and guests (not logged in), see this alert at checkout and cannot purchase: You do not meet the purchase requirements for "(product name)".
When a customer who has the vip tag is logged in, this alert is not shown.
If the app embed is enabled, a product message such as "(product name) is available only to VIP member." is shown near the cart button on the product page.
A guest can still purchase if the email address entered at checkout matches an existing customer who has the vip tag. A product with "Login" set to "Required" is blocked from the time it is added to the cart when the display timing is "Cart updated and checkout".
