A customer rule lets you restrict purchases of eligible products based on login status, customer tags, customer metafields, and the email address entered at checkout.
Before creating a customer rule, choose a pricing plan from "Pricing" in the app admin.
Prerequisite: A test contract for a pricing plan is required even when testing on a development store. Under Shopify's specifications, test contracts are free.
Set the customer conditions that allow or block purchase, then enable the customer rule.
(1) Open Customer rules
Open the app admin → "Customer rules".
(2) Create the customer rule
Select "Create rule".
(3) Set the customer conditions and save
Configure the required fields and save.
You can configure the following for a customer rule.
Settings | Description |
|---|---|
Title | The rule name for internal use |
Limit details | The purchase conditions based on customer account, customer tags, customer metafields, and the email address entered at checkout |
Eligible items | All items, a specific collection, specific products, or products with a specific tag |
Product message | The message shown on the product page (optional) |
Alert message | The message and display timing shown when the limit is violated |
Note: If "Require account" is disabled, or if email domain restrictions are used, display timing is automatically set to "Checkout only".
(4) Enable the customer rule
In the customer rule list, select the rule and choose "Enable rule", or select "Enable" on the edit screen.
Enabling the app embed is a recommended setting. It is required if you display product messages. If you only use customer limits, this step is not necessary.
(1) Open the theme editor
Open Shopify admin → "Online Store" → "Themes" → "Customize".
(2) Open App embeds
Select "App embeds".
(3) Enable RuffRuff Order Limits
Enable "RuffRuff Order Limits" and save.
Note: If you display product messages, enable the app embed in the main theme. Even if the app embed is disabled, customer limits are still enforced at checkout.
Depending on the restriction you set, check the behavior as a customer who cannot make the purchase.
Condition set | How to check |
|---|---|
Require account | Purchase the eligible product while logged out |
Allowed customer tags or metafields | Purchase the eligible product with an account that does not meet the allow condition |
Blocked customer tags or metafields | Purchase the eligible product with an account that meets the block condition |
Blocked email domains | Enter a blocked email address at checkout |
If the display timing is "Cart updated and checkout," check in the cart and at checkout. If it is "Checkout only," check at checkout.
