RuffRuff Order Limits

Initial Setup (Price Limits)

This explains the steps for using price limits for the first time after installation.

There are three ways to limit price: "price rules," which apply the same condition to a broad scope, "price limits by product," which apply different conditions per product or variant, and "cumulative price rules," which cap the total a customer purchases across orders. The three methods can be used together.

Choose the method to use depending on the unit you want to limit.

Applicability options

Price rules

Applying the same condition to a broad scope

Cart, Product, Variant

Price limits by product

Changing the condition depending on the product or variant

Product, Variant

Cumulative price rules

Capping the total amount one customer purchases across orders

Whole rule, Product, Variant

For the differences between the three methods and how to choose, see Comparing the Three Price Limit Methods.

Choose a pricing plan from "Pricing" in the app admin first. Choosing a pricing plan first lets you continue through to enabling the limit with any of the methods. If you use cumulative price rules, choose the Full plan.

Prerequisite: A test contract for a pricing plan is required even when testing on a development store. Under Shopify's specifications, test contracts are free.

Follow the steps below depending on the method you use.

(1) Open Price rules

Open the app admin → "Price limits" → "Price rules".

(2) Create the rule

Select "Create rule".

(3) Save the settings

Configure the required fields and save.

You can configure the following for a price rule.

Settings

Title

Limit details

Minimum price, maximum price

Price type

Item total (before product discounts), Item total (after product discounts), Cart subtotal, Grand total

Applicability

Cart, Product, Variant

Eligible items

All items, a specific collection, specific products, or products with a specific tag

Display timing

Product message

The message shown on the product page (optional)

Alert message

The message shown when the limit is violated

When the price type is "Cart subtotal" or "Grand total," eligible items are automatically fixed to "All items," applicability to "Cart," and display timing to "Checkout only."

(4) Enable the price rule

For a price rule, select the rule in the list and choose "Enable rule", or select "Enable" on the edit screen.

(1) Open Price limits by product

Open the app admin → "Price limits" → "Price limits by product".

(2) Start using it

Select "Start using". This prepares the settings for products and variants. The limit is not applied yet.

(3) Set the price for each product or variant

Set "Price limit" or "Total price limit" to "Enabled" for the eligible product, then set the minimum price, maximum price, and price basis. If needed, select "Edit total price targets" or "Edit limits for each variant", then save with "Save changes" or the save bar.

(4) Enable price limits by product

Open "Settings" and select "Enable". This enables the dedicated checkout rule. If it hasn't been created yet, this action creates it.

(1) Open the cumulative price rules list

In the app admin, open "Price limits" → "Cumulative price rules."

(2) Enable cumulative purchase limits

Grant the additional permissions and select "Enable." If they are already enabled for cumulative quantity rules, you can skip this step. Enabling them cannot be undone.

(3) Create a rule

Select "Create a cumulative price rule," then set the maximum amount, the amount type, what the total is counted per, the eligible items, and the messages, and save.

The eligible items, the amount type, and what the total is counted per cannot be changed once tracking has started.

(4) Enable the cumulative price rule

Select "Enable" from the list, or "Enable" on the rule details screen.

Enabling the app embed is a recommended setting. It is required if you use product messages. If you only use limits at checkout, this step is not necessary.

(1) Open the theme editor

Open Shopify admin → "Online Store" → "Themes" → "Customize".

(2) Open App embeds

Select "App embeds".

(3) Enable RuffRuff Order Limits

Enable "RuffRuff Order Limits" and save.

Note: The limit is still enforced at checkout even if you don't enable the app embed. The app embed is required if you use product messages.

Check the behavior with a quantity that puts the price under the minimum or over the maximum.

If the display timing is "Cart updated and checkout," check in the cart. If it is "Checkout only," proceed to checkout to check.

If the price type is "Item total (after product discounts)," also check at checkout, where the discounted price is finalized.

For a cumulative price rule, proceed to checkout with eligible products worth more than the maximum amount. Only checkout counts what the customer has purchased before.

Check the following to make sure setup is complete.

  • Chose a pricing plan

  • Set up the limit using the method you use

  • Enabled the limit

  • Enabled the app embed (recommended; required if you use product messages)

  • Checked the behavior according to the display timing
